Homework

owl homework

We don’t have mandatory homework in Kindergarten, but a lot of times our students ASK us for it because they are so proud to show their grown-ups at home what they know. Each month your child will bring home an age-appropriate homework choice board that they can complete and return at the end of the month for a reward!

Other Things To Do at Home…

  • Read to your child for at least 20 minutes every day. Ask them comprehension questions during and after reading. Who are the characters in this story? What is the setting? What was the problem and how was it solved? How can you tell he/she is feeling ____ in this page? What do you think the author's message is in this book? Etc.
  • Let them read to you! Students should have copies of all of the decodable readers we have read together this year in their plastic “book library” baggie. Rereading familiar stories helps students read fluently.
  • Write! We practice writing EVERYDAY in kindergarten. Allow your child to start a daily journal and use their Kid Writing Skills to stretch out words and write the sounds they hear. Praise them for all the sounds they heard correctly and model how “adults write the word.”
  • Letters and Sounds Students can make their own alphabet flashcards and practice them like we do at school. "Letter is ____ , sound is ______." In our class we have cards for all 26 letters plus a card for the letters ch, sh, th, wh, bl, sl, cl, fl, and pl.
  • Teach how to do chores. Giving kindergartners "jobs" teaches responsibility and accountability. Jobs appropriate for children 5-6 include:
      • Picking up toys and books
      • Putting trash in garbage can
      • Put dirty laundry in the hamper
      • Dust
      • Put away silverware
      • Set and clear the table
      • Fold rags and dishcloths
      • Take care of pets
      • Match socks
      • Make bed
      • Sweep with a small broom
